Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class in Houston: What to Expect at Brazil-021 Houston

Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but not sure what to expect? Walking into a BJJ academy for the first time can feel a little intimidating, especially if you've never practiced martial arts before.
Maybe it's been years since you've exercised consistently. Maybe you're looking for a new way to get active. Or maybe you've been searching for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in Houston and want to know what actually happens once you walk through the door.
The good news is you don't need any experience to start.
At Brazil-021 Houston, we welcome beginners of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels. Everyone you see training on the mats, from white belts to black belts, had a first day too.
What Should I Wear to My First BJJ Class?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from new students.
For your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, comfortable athletic clothing is perfect. A fitted T-shirt or rash guard with athletic shorts or leggings works well. Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, or anything that could catch during training.
If you're trying a Gi class and don't own a BJJ Gi yet, don't worry. We have Gi rentals available for trial students.
We recommend arriving about 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to check in, meet your instructor, get changed if necessary, and get comfortable with the academy before class begins.
What Happens During a Beginner BJJ Class?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes generally begin with a warm-up followed by technique and instruction. Your professor or coach will demonstrate a technique and break it down step by step before students practice it with a partner.
You aren't expected to remember everything during your first class. In fact, you probably won't, and that's completely normal.
BJJ takes time to learn. Your first class isn't about being perfect or proving how athletic you are. It's about getting comfortable on the mats, learning something new, and experiencing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for yourself.
Will I Have to Fight Someone?
This is another question we hear from people interested in trying BJJ for the first time.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu includes live training, commonly called rolling, but your first day isn't about throwing you into a fight and seeing what happens.
Our instructors want new students to learn safely and develop an understanding of basic positions, movement, and technique. When you begin live training, you'll work with teammates and instructors who understand that you're new.
The goal isn't to “win” practice. The goal is to learn and improve.
Do I Need to Be in Shape Before Starting Jiu-Jitsu?
Absolutely not.
A lot of people tell themselves, “I'll start Jiu-Jitsu once I get in better shape.”
You don't need to get in shape before starting BJJ. Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can become part of how you get there.
BJJ challenges your cardiovascular endurance, strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, and problem-solving skills. Those things develop over time through consistent training.
Whether you're already active or haven't worked out in years, you can start at your own level and build from there.
What If I Don't Know Anyone?
You won't be the first person to walk into our Houston BJJ academy without knowing anyone.
One of the best parts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the community that develops on the mats. You'll train alongside people of different ages, professions, backgrounds, and experience levels who all have something in common. They chose to start too.
Over time, the people you drill and train with become teammates and often friends.
BJJ Etiquette for Your First Class
You don't need to memorize a long list of rules before trying Jiu-Jitsu. We'll help you along the way.
A few basics go a long way:
Arrive clean and practice good personal hygiene.
Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed.
Remove jewelry before training.
Wear clean training clothes or a clean Gi.
Wear shoes when you're off the mat and never wear shoes on the mat.
Be respectful of your professors, coaches, and training partners.
Come ready to learn.
Everyone Starts as a Beginner
It can be easy to look around the room during your first BJJ class and think everyone else knows exactly what they're doing.
They didn't always.
Every colored belt was once a brand-new white belt learning how to tie their Gi, figuring out where to put their hands, and wondering what half the words being used in class meant.
The difference between the beginner walking into their first class and the experienced student you see on the mat is simple.
They kept coming back.
